Lot 1855 DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, Santo Domingo, copper 4 maravedís, Charles-Joanna, assayer "E" (F) to left, deno
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, Santo Domingo, copper 4 maravedís, Charles-Joanna, assayer "E" (F) to left, denomination 4 to right, with two S countermarks for Jamaica (1/11 real, 1581-82). S-SD1; KM-43. 2.98 grams. In 1581-82, the governor of Santiago (the Spanish name for what is now Jamaica), Lucas del Valle, imported 100,000 of these coins to that island at the rate of 25 to the real, countermarked them with an S, and released them for circulation at a rate of 11 to the real, thereby making a substantial profit for himself! Interesting example with two clear S countermarks on the obverse, one in the center and the other on the edge at 10 o'clock. VF host coin with some surface corrosion, some design and legend detail showing through.
